Copart Cares: Our Plan-Net-Zero Milestones

Our world is changing. Our climate is changing. It is one of the biggest challenges facing our planet today.

Here at Copart, as we continue to expand and improve our landbank, facilities, and range of customer services, we have a responsibility to operate sustainably and ethically.

As you’d expect, we take that responsibility seriously, and led by our Sustainability Committee, we aim to educate and inspire the right behaviors, allowing us all to make professional and personal changes for the better.

Recycling has already been part of our DNA ever since our inception in 1982 and since then, we have facilitated the reuse and recycling of millions of vehicles and parts globally each year. But as you know, we are always moving forward and of course we have not stopped there.

We are passionate about acting responsibly in everything that we do, so we implemented our Plan-Net-Zero strategy with a clear roadmap towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

Our Plan-Net-Zero focuses on 4 key areas; our operations (which includes achieving the greenest fleet on the street), green parts and recycling, sustainable environments and finally being a green team.

And behind all of this is our Copart Cares commitment, providing the core values that ensure we always act in the right and most responsible way for our customers, teammates, partners, communities, and the environment.

The environmental focus is of course at the very heart of this commitment, underpinned by the 4-R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover.

The hundreds of thousands of vehicles that we sell in our unique online auction are all recycled in some way, either through repair, green parts, or reuse. And our capabilities have now expanded even further with The Green Parts Specialists having joined our Copart Family.

By combining The Green Parts Specialists with our 40 years of expertise in salvage, we can now offer our customers an exceptional range of recycling solutions alongside our existing market leading Total Loss and Remarketing services.

As we continue to grow, we are committed to establishing a sustainable supply chain and a focus on maintaining biodiversity and green spaces. We’re developing buildings and infrastructure that are green, efficient, and sustainable long term. Our focus includes LED lighting, paperless offices, green energy, water recycling, and zero to landfill.

With Copart owning the largest dedicated salvage and vehicle transportation fleet in our sector, how we operate it really matters.

We’ve made continual upgrades to our fleet to actively reduce our carbon footprint and now have over 300 Euro VI-compliant vehicle transporters. And we’re pleased to say that initiatives like alternative fuel solutions, EV options, and dynamic routing capabilities have already reduced our miles travelled and fuel consumption significantly.

There are many more transport-related initiatives underway, and we are well on our way to becoming the greenest fleet on the street.

In terms of accreditations, we already have the ISO 14001 Environment Management certification under our belt as part of our ‘Super Six’ portfolio and next up we’re aiming to achieve ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting in 2024.

This year we were also awarded a BronzeEcoVadis Medal for sustainability progress, planted over 1,000 trees through Ecologi as part of our carbon neutral Driver Academy training programme, and became an IMI approved accreditation centre for EV and hybrid vehicle training.

At the heart of everything we do are our teammates. Every single individual has a vital role to play in Copart being a truly green team, whether that is practicing fuel-efficient driving, acting in a sustainable way, or completing training to become Carbon Literate.

Over 50% of our workforce has now completed Carbon Literacy training, meaning that a gold accreditation is imminent!

But all of this great stuff only matters if it makes a difference. To ensure that it does, we have publicly committed to the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, giving us a clearly defined pathway towards reducing our emissions.

With many more projects in the pipeline, we’ll continue to make meaningful changes and we look forward to having you join us on this journey towards a greener future.
