The story behind our move online is simple. One snowy winter’s day, at a physical Copart auction in the US, our founder Willis J Johnson noticed buyers were queuing outside in the cold in order to get a chance to bid on the vehicles they were interested in. It was at this point that Willis realised Copart needed to be able to scale, yet maintain the competitive nature of a live Copart auction. This is how our unique live auction platform was born.
What’s the unique part? Consider the online auctions you already know; you enter your maximum bid and monitor to see if you win within a set timeframe. You can’t see what everyone else is bidding, you only know if someone else has offered more for the lot than you have, or if you are still the highest bidder when the time is up.
The unique element is that following a timed auction, Copart hosts live auctions with the competitive nature of a physical auction, on a large scale. During each of our live auctions each attendee can see the latest bid and counterbid at the click of a button, with the lot closing as ‘sold’ when the bidding has finished. We are still the only online auction in the world to have this live functionality!
