Copart Plan-Net-Zero

Driving Positive Change to a Greener Future

Our vision is to reach a net-zero future without compromising our world-class customer service. This is how we plan to achieve it.

Climate protection is the biggest challenge facing our planet today, and transportation plays a crucial role in meeting that challenge.

At Copart, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously. That’s why, as the owner of the UK’s largest salvage transport fleet, we’ve made sustainability the focal point of our future strategy.

For us, that means taking action by pursuing a Plan-Net-Zero-Programme – our formal commitment to both global sustainability and becoming a more sustainable business by achieving net-zero emissions.

As a global leader in online vehicle remarketing and recycling, our vision is to achieve a carbon-neutral future while consistently delivering a world-class level of customer service.

To achieve this, we have committed to three far-reaching sustainability programmes:

Copart transport fleet

Protect our climate by operating ‘the greenest fleet on the street’

Increase our energy efficiency through smart technologies and innovative green solutions

Reduce our carbon footprint by implementing green workspace initiatives

As part of our ongoing Copart Cares campaign, we are taking an integrated approach to sustainability so that every aspect of our business can be more environmentally responsible.

We currently operate a number of sustainability initiatives that have delivered significant reductions on our journey to net zero.

These include:

Greener Transportation

Enhanced fleet sustainability with our Euro VI compliant transportation network in line with current UK environmental requirements

Saved over 376,000 litres of fuel in the past 12 months and reduced emissions by 94% (fine particles) and 93% (nitrogen oxides) (that’s the equivalent of over 10 fuel tankers)

Significant investment to upgrade over 200 transporters to Euro VI to engine technology, which manufacturers assert will lower fuel consumption by 15% and save 1.37 million kg of carbon a year (which is more than 14 return flights between Heathrow and New York)

Further major investment to upgrade 42 JCB loaders with lower fuel consumption and emissions, plus ongoing trials with JCB for future-proof loaders that will minimise our environmental impact

Additional investment in single-car transporters to enhance fleet efficiency and further reduce carbon emissions

The continuous evolution of Copart’s Operation Centres to support electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid requirements, plus over 3,000 hours of EV training and development for our staff

Smart technology

Reduced annual mileage by 10% with our Dynamic Routing System – a saving of 1million kilometres a year (just under 25 trips around the equator!)

Lowered emissions and maintenance costs through our comprehensive driver behaviour technology, which helps improve driver efficiency and long-term fleet sustainability

Implemented a national transport planning team that manages specialist route planning software, ensuring optimised routing expertise, reduced mileage, and lower carbon emissions

Relaunched our Transporter App to streamline collection scheduling and reduce paper usage, with further technologies in development to ultimately help Copart become a paperless business

Full compliance to the principles of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS), which aligns our business processes and procedures towards an increased sustainability

Green Workspaces

Constant introductions of eco solutions throughout our UK offices and Operation Centres, including energy saving systems and onsite waste management facilities

Rigorous measurement of our company-wide footprint to ensure we achieve our low carbon targets and sustainability requirements

Investment in laptops and software that supports hybrid working practices, helping reduce mileage by teammates commuting to our offices

Diligent monitoring of sources for computer systems and IT equipment that minimise the impact of extraction and mining, including rare earths sourced from developing countries

Forwards to Net Zero

Alongside these initiatives and green investments, external auditors will also review our annual Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) reports, as well as Copart’s EMS objectives and on-site processes, to ensure we achieve our sustainability commitments.

Our Plan-Net-Zero Programme also involves supply chain analysis. We comprehensively review and quantify each of our supplier’s emissions using the Economic Input-Output Life-Cycle Assessment (EIO-LCA) method.

In addition, we are exploring a ‘zero waste to landfill’ action plan – which ensures that no waste goes to landfill – through alternative green solutions that will increase our processing efficiency.

We are also seeking to develop an accredited carbon literacy training course for all our UK staff. Presently, around 40% of UK emissions come from households and buildings.

By empowering our teammates with energy-saving strategies, we anticipate a 15% reduction in emissions throughout our business.

Much more work is still to be done, but Copart is passionately committed to the challenges ahead. By making a transformative change today, we believe we can create a sustainable tomorrow.
