Sustainability from the very first mile

Here at Copart, whether we’re giving vehicles a new lease of life through our auctions or utilising them to supply green parts for repairs and restoration, sustainability is thoughtfully built into every stage of the vehicle journey. And it all begins with collection.

Sustainability from the very first mile

Every collection begins at our Copart Excellence Centre in Bedford, where our team springs into action as soon as a request comes in.

No two collections are ever the same — and that’s exactly why we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. With a diverse fleet of transporters in all shapes and sizes, we’re able to choose the right vehicle for the job every time.

That means fewer wasted miles, less fuel used and lower carbon emissions, while still meeting the demands of complex or restricted collections.

The right vehicle and the right route, right from the start!

A cleaner, smarter transport fleet

Transport accounts for almost a quarter of global CO₂ emissions, and as part of the automotive sector, we know we have a responsibility to lead by example.

That’s why our entire UK fleet is Euro VI and Direct Vision Standard (DVS) compliant and equipped with cutting-edge technology, including connected telematics and advanced camera systems. These tools help our drivers operate efficiently and safely, while significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

We’ve also introduced a unique fuel pickup system across the fleet. By ensuring only clean fuel enters the fuel lines, we eliminate contamination issues — which means better performance, lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions.

And we’re not stopping there. Looking ahead, we’re exploring the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a cleaner alternative fuel for our transporters and loaders — with the potential to dramatically reduce tailpipe CO₂ emissions.

Intelligent planning that makes a real difference

As the owner of the UK’s largest salvage transport fleet, smart planning is essential.

Our Transportation Control Centre, also based in Bedford, uses innovative technology and real-time data to plan every collection in the most efficient way possible.

By analysing driver behaviour through telematics, we’re actively reducing emissions, cutting unnecessary road miles and identifying opportunities to improve fuel efficiency long term.

State-of-the-art route scheduling technology, live road data and constant communication with our drivers all work together to avoid delays, navigate obstacles and choose the smartest routes — saving time, fuel and carbon every step of the way.

Digital tools, less paper, lower impact

Sustainability isn’t only about vehicles and fuel — it’s about smarter ways of working too.

Our unique purpose-built Transporter App gives us a real-time eagle eye view of our transport network, helping us deliver faster and more efficient collections.

Once on site, the same app is used to record a vehicle’s condition using images and digital data capture. That means no paperwork, no delays and no wasted resources — with all information stored centrally for quick, accurate and environmentally friendly vehicle processing.

Keeping journeys short and impact low

After collection, vehicles are transported to the nearest Copart Operation Centre for processing.

With 33 locations across the UK and Ireland, we’re never far away. Our proximity to customers and communities helps us keep journeys short, minimise emissions and operate efficiently — especially important as clean air zones continue to expand across the UK.

Just the beginning of the journey

This first stage of the vehicle journey shows how deeply sustainability is embedded into the way we work — from cleaner fleets and fuel innovation to intelligent planning and paper-free processes. And this is only the beginning of the journey.
