As part of our ongoing Plan-Net-Zero sustainability commitment, we’re pleased to share this updated Copart Case Study, which demonstrates how Carbon Literacy training has successfully shifted awareness and positively changed behaviours across our business.

Company Information

Copart UK Ltd is a global leader in online vehicle remarketing and recycling, providing services to the insurance, trade, accident management, automotive fleet, finance, and rental sectors.

Our Carbon Literacy journey began on 31st January 2022 with the aim of achieving the highest possible Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) accreditation via The Carbon Literacy Project.

  • Bronze achieved July 2022
  • Silver achieved Jan 2023
  • Gold achieved Nov 2023
  • Silver partnership 2025

Before

New starters previously completed an ‘Environmental Awareness’ eLearning module but it wasn’t felt that teammates were being encouraged to make environmentally positive choices. As a result, an ESG committee made up of senior leaders from across all areas of our business was established to focus on our environmental agenda.

Our Plan-Net-Zero was developed to give us a clear path to follow and motivate teammates to make positive environmental changes. The Carbon Literacy Project accreditation programme gave us structured targets to help achieve this goal.

During

Copart has used the Automotive toolkit approved by the Carbon Literacy Project, to reach teammates and managers across a large geographical spread, as well as remote workers.

When going for gold we developed our own blended learning approach, split into 4 parts with 3 eLearning modules and a half day classroom course. This flexible approach accommodated teammates in operational or customer facing roles who could not commit to longer sessions.

Initial sessions had breakout activities for teammates to discuss ideas together when developing persona/group actions, but this approach meant many people wrote similar actions. In the next sessions, we arranged for individual work on each action, shared to the group later. This ensured that teammates remained engaged, focused, and reassured that they were on the right track.

After

Carbon Literacy training has successfully shifted awareness and positively changed behaviours across our business. Actions have been carefully considered, and each training session has sparked positive conversations within teams about how sustainability can be improved.

We’ve also recruited a Sustainability Manager and now offer Carbon Literacy training to our customers and partners. Many projects are being implemented from ideas generated during the training sessions including fuel efficiency and recycled tyre initiatives across our transport fleet.

We’re now aiming to achieve and maintain the platinum accreditation, by delivering training to 70%+ of our teammates and continuing to complete Carbon Literacy actions.
